Le Moulinot is an 18th century stone Burgundian watermill, which was renovated to offer comfortable accommodation for up to 12 guests in six ensuite bedrooms. The three-storey stone building has lots of character, with exposed wooden ceiling beams, hardwood floors, and antique furniture and tiles. Le Moulinot is set in seven acres (three hectares) of private grounds, bordered by its own lake-like millpond and the River Cure. The solar heated swimming pool is sunk into the ground, adjacent to and level with the millpond. Next to the pool, tables and chairs and a barbecue provide an ideal spot for dining outdoors. The house is surrounded by terraced areas, with plenty of space to relax in sun or shade.
On the ground floor, the living room overlooks the millpond. Sofas and armchairs surround the fireplace, and there is a satellite TV, WiFi access, stereo, and DVD player for relaxing. An antique Jacobean dining table seats twelve guests comfortably. The large kitchen has an electric oven, gas burners, and a dishwasher, and has all the equipment and features needed to explore Burgundian cuisine. Also on the ground floor is a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer, and an additional wc.
On the middle floor, the master bedroom has a queen size double bed, a sitting area, and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub. A suite has a double bed, an adjoining room with a sitting area, and an ensuite shower room. On the top floor there are four smaller bedrooms: two rooms, each with a double bed and a shower room, one room with a double bed and a bathroom, and one room with two twin beds and a shower room.
The owner's house and another smaller cottage are also on the property, and the 10m x 8m solar heated swimming pool is shared by all. Due to the surrounding water, the owners do not encourage children who are not strong swimmers.
About the area:
Le Moulinot is a five minute walk from the village of Vermenton, which has a restaurant and a good range of shops and services, including a supermarket, a pharmacy, a doctor, banks, bars, a bakery, a butcher, a hairdresser, an antique shop, a newsagent/tabac and a railway station.
There is a particularly good restaurant in the next village of Accolay, a fifteen minute walk along the canal, where dinner is often served on the courtyard terrace.
There are many activities available locally, including canoeing, rafting, fishing, swimming, riding and mountain biking. There are tennis courts in Vermenton, and a public sandy river beach where pedalos may be rented.
A grand randonnée hiking trail passes nearby.
The owners are happy to arrange hot air balloon flights for their guests, leaving from the garden.
Situated at the entrance to the village of Vermenton, Le Moulinot is an excellent base from which to explore the region of the “trois vallées” extending from Chablis to Vézelay. Northern Burgundy is a land of hills covered with forests and pastures, and narrow valleys with swiftly flowing rivers. The region is sprinkled with cultural and historical treasures: Arcy and its famous caves that contain the second oldest prehistoric drawings found in mainland Europe; the bustling cathedral town of Auxerre with its elegant half-timbered houses; Vézelay, a World Heritage Site where emperors, kings, popes, pilgrims and crusaders gathered; Avallon with its ramparts and Romanesque church; and the Morvan National Park. At the site of Guédelon, a fortified castle is being built using the techniques of the 13th century.
The nearby slopes of Chablis, Irancy and Saint Bris have been the site of vineyards since Roman times. Wine tasting opportunities are plentiful, and a guided tour can be arranged to introduce visitors to the lesser-known gems.
Keep in mind that Burgundy is renowned for its gastronomy with a choice of 3 Michelin star restaurants in the Yonne alone!
