Forming a substantial part of a stone-built former farmhouse, this 200 year-old wisteria clad gite is situated 18 km east of Autun, which was the former capital of France in Roman times. Set amongst wooded countryside, the house has views across fields and rolling hillsides. belonging to the local chateau.
Recently renovated to a very high standard, yet carefully preserving its unique character with exposed beams throughout, Les Glycines provides a comfortable base for a relaxing holiday close to some of Burgundy's best known vineyards. With three bedrooms and two shower rooms, this spacious gite can easily accommodate three couples or a larger family party and offers private fishing, use of the owners' pool and internet access.
Road access is easy via motorway from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Calais is 600 km, Le Havre is 500 km and Caen is 550 km.
The London Eurostar connects with fast TGV trains operating via Paris to Dijon ( 1 hour by car), Beaune ( half an hour) and Le Creusot (40 minutes). There is also one train a day via Lille to Le Creusot, avoiding Paris.
Lyon airport is about 2 hours drive to the south and Geneva airport is about 3 hours away.
Hire cars are available at all these destinations.
This holiday home is situated between the Cote d'Or wine centre of Beaune to the east and Autun, to the west. The medieaval city of Dijon, majestic seat of the Dukes of Burgundy, with its famous cathedral and Musee des Beaux Arts, is about an hour's drive to the north. This region of France is rich in architectural history and boasts the famous world heritage site of Vezelay, monastic remains at Cluny, the mosaic tiled roof of the Hospice at Beaune and the amphitheatre at Autun. Throughout Burgundy there are numerous abbeys and romantic chateaux just waiting to be visited. Just 20 minutes drive to the northwest, the Morvan National Park offers opportunities for long distance walking, pony trekking and boating on the Lac de Settons whilst, for the archaeologically minded, a fascinating day out awaits at the ancient Celtic city of Bibracte set high in the Morvan hills.
In the immediate viciinity, there is plenty of easy walking straight from the house, including a visit to the local Chateau de Sully just down the road. The nearby small town of Epinac caters for most everyday shopping needs and offers friendly cafe/bars and a twice weekly market. One can cycle there along an old railway line and buy fresh croissants for breakfast! Meanwhile, there are many fine restaurants and tourist attractions in Autun, including the Roman ramparts and amphitheatre, as well as its cathedral, museum and a military school with a splendid mosaic roof. Many art exhibitions and music festivals are held in the area throughout the summer months and autumn is the time to indulge the senses at wine tasting events and at the chestnut fair at St. Leger sous Beuvray.
Nearby sporting activities include biking, boating, bowling, fishing, golf, horse riding, swimming, tennis and table tennis. Thw owners have a small lake in a nearby wood which is stocked with carp and other small fish. Guests are welcome to try their luck. There is a large swimming pool and leisure centre at Autun and lake swimming is available at Arnay le Duc, about 15 minutes drive away. Bicycles may be hired locally and there are a number of small lakes where guests may place their own canoes.
The gite has been carefully renovated by the present owners who live on site and who are at hand to answer queries and offer any assistance needed. Guests benefit from their own enclosed garden with gazebo and outdoor furniture and barbecue. They are also invited to share the owners' pool and, depending on the time of year, may receive offers of fresh garden produce. In summer, outside entertaining is easy with steps leading to the garden from both the farmhouse style kitchen and the traditional Burgundian salon. In winter, the large open fireplace with its roaring log fire offers a warm welcome and the hydro-massage shower upstairs adds an extra touch of luxury!
The accommodation comprises a large double bedroom with an extra single bed, a twin bedded room with another single bed and a small double bedded room. There is a large shower room with hydro -massage shower, vanitory basin, wc and heater and a separate toilet room with wc and hand basin. Downstairs, there is another shower room with large step-down shower, wc, basin and washing machine. The well appointed kitchen leads to the large comfortable salon with beamed ceiling and original stone fireplace. Logs are available on request. There is spacious sitting and dining for up to eight people and a baby's high chair can be hired from the owners.
Central heating, when needed, is included in the rent and there is parking space for two cars just across the road from the gite.
