THE LOCAL AREA

VERTEILLAC

Verteillac is just 5 mins drive from your accomodation ( or a healthy Bike Ride ) and the nearest place for all the essentials, Banks, Main Post Office, Doctors, Newsagent, Pharmacy, & General Store. The Boulangerie makes the Best Bread & Pastries / cakes in the area.
There are 3 Bars to choose from and a Bistro which serves good simple food and has Chid friendly things like Pizza & Burgers, just up the road is the Hotel Perigord with it's more formal Restaurant, most local specialaties can be found here, and the food is good quality.
There is a small market on Saturday Morning, and a few times a year there is a Night Market, which is a Big Local Event, everyone seems to attend ! dates for this will be posted on our Diary / Blog Page.

RIBERAC

Riberac is about 15mins by car to the South of Le Nouvelle Ferme, and is the nearest medium sized town. It has an abundance of Cafes Restaurants & Bars. There is a skateboard park for Teenagers, a Rugby Stadium where the local team play their home games ( worth a visit if you appreciate the game ).
The Friday Market is not to be missed, the produce has to be seen to be appreciated, so fresh and well presented, Seafood is also fantastic and there is nothing you can’t get. Clothing, Toys, Gifts etc, it takes a whole morning to see it all.

The market place is also the venue for regular Antiques Fairs, very large events, taking up every inch of space, amazing things to be found, even if you cannot fit them in your suitcase to take home. Two large Supermarkets are here, and offer the best value for money for all your catering needs, fuel is also cheapest at the supermarket, often 12 to 15 cents cheaper per litre. Banks, Chemists, Cinema, Canoeing on the River, pretty much everything you could need.

Most importantly, if you need to see a Doctor or Dentist whilst on your Holiday, both can be found here, the Doctors at the Medical Centre are all Very Good and most speak some English. ( Fingers crossed you won’t need either )

AUBETERRE - SUR - DRONNE

The very beautiful town of AUBETERRE-SUR-DRONNE, with its ancient galleried and turreted houses, hangs on a steep hillside above the river, some 30km downstream of Riberac. There is a lovely beach on the bank of the river, with children's playground and other facilities. Its principal curiosity is the cavernous Eglise Monolithe (daily: July to Oct 9.30am–12.30pm & 2–7pm; Nov–June 9.30am–12.30pm & 2–6pm; €3.50), carved out of the soft rock of the cliff face in the twelfth century, with its rock-hewn tombs going back to the sixth. A (blocked-off) tunnel connects with the Chateau on the bluff overhead. There's also the extremely beautiful church of Saint Jaques, with an eleventh-century facade sculpted and decorated in the richly carved Poitiers style on the street leading uphill from the square. Aubeterre is situated about a 20 min drive South West of Le Nouvelle Ferme.

BRANTÔME

Brantome is 27km north of Périgueux, about 15 min drive from Le Nouvelle Ferme, on the Angoulême road and beloved of British tourists, sits in a bend of the River Dronne, whose still, water-lilied surface mirrors the limes and weeping willows of the riverside gardens. On the north bank of the river are the church and convent buildings of the ancienne abbaye that for centuries has been Brantôme's focus. Its stone facades, now masking the secular offices of the Hôtel de Ville, have that pallor and blank stare so characteristic of the self-denying institutional life – not that self-denial was a virtue associated with this monastery's most notorious abbot, Pierre de Bourdeilles, the sixteenth-century author of scurrilous tales of life at the royal court. It's worth taking a look inside the église abbatiale (abbey church) for the palm-frond vaulting of the chapterhouse and the font made from a carved and grounded pillar capital. Also of architectural interest is a fine stone staircase at the east end of the Hôtel de Ville, but Brantôme's best architectural feature is the Limousin-style Romanesque belfry standing behind the church against the wooded and cave-riddled scarp that forms the backdrop to the village.

Families with children may appreciate the Musée de Rêve et Miniatures in rue Puyjoli (April–June & Sept to mid-Nov daily except Fri 2–5/6pm; July & Aug daily 11am–6pm; €5.80), while a walk through the nearby gardens and along the pleasant balustraded riverbanks is a must. There are also boat trips on the river in summer (May–Sept; €5.50).
There is a fantastic Brocante ( Junk/Antiques Shop ) situated on the far bank of the river, turn right at the cathedral and it's on the left, unusual things are in abundance !

LAKE JEMAYE

Lake Jemaye is situated South of Riberac, approx 25min by Car from your accommodation. It is a Very Large spring fed Fresh Water Lake, there is a Large beech and swimming is safe and the water is clean. Lifeguards are on duty during the Summer months, Pedalos and Fishing can also be found around the Lake. There are a couple of Bars / Restaurants and Two Very well equipped Childrens Playgrounds. Recommended for a Day out ! and surprisingly it seems not to get that busy, when you consider how beautiful and tranquil it is !

PLATEAU DE ARGENTINE

This special place is just a 5 minute drive from your accomodation ! The views on a clear day are spectacular in all directions. Take a short walk to the tiny village of Argentine, there is a beautiful disused church, which can be explored. Truly like stepping back in time.

NB beware on the Landing Strip, clearly marked, and used on clear days by Light Aircraft and Model Enthusiasts.
You will hear them coming, but best to stand well behind the markers

REGIONAL INFORMATION

It doesn't matter where you go in the area surrounding Le Nouvelle Ferme, on every road and round every corner, there are stunning views, fantastic Chateau's, pretty churches, manoirs, water mills, always something to see. Make sure you get off the main roads and take time to walk around the small villages and hamlets as these cannot be appreciated by driving past, you never know what you may find !

Your accomodation is idealy situated in the Northern part of the Dordogne, which means not only are you able to take advantage of all the delights of the Dordogne Region including the following towns : Angouleme - Perigueux - Bergerac, but you can easily access places like Cognac & Jarnac in the southern Charente Region, they are the centres of all the finest brandy producers Martell, Henessey, Courvoisier etc.

Rochfaucauld
with it's Amazing Chateau is a must visit, if you have time take the Chateau Tour it's well worth it.

Bordeaux is just 1 1/2 hrs pleasant drive away, if you crave the Big City, Royan is a bit further on, with some of the best beaches in France.

The forests and Lakes of the Limosin Region are not that far away for a Day Trip.

Remember driving in France is a very pleasant experience, so going a bit farther afield is not hard work, forget those traffic jams and tour around at your own pace.

Some of the most beautiful places we have found, were by total accident, just turn off the Main Road and see where you end up ! It's the only way to see unspoilt France !

If you like Car Boot Sales, keep an eye open for signs saying '' Vide Grenier '' ( translated means empty Loft ) usually held once a year in most villages, they are often set in lovely locations, by a river or in tiny narrow village streets, the things you see at these events will amaze !

Perigueux

Visiting the Old Town is a must, lots of interesting shops, down narrow lanes, the cathederal is lovely and there is a military museum to visit.
As you would expect there is an abundance of good quality restaurants to choose from look for the ones nearly full of locals enjoying lunch, they are not often wrong !
