La Gilardie is an attractive, single storey house (about 300 years old) for 4 to 5 persons, which forms part of the owners’ renovated Perigordian farmhouse. It is set in the beautiful Forêt de la Double in a small hamlet, surrounded by woods, fields and lakes. Because the property is on level ground with no steps, it is wheelchair friendly, but not fully equipped for all needs. It is a place to relax, to enjoy the sounds and sights of a fairly untamed countryside, to watch the buzzards circle the sky or the hen harriers hunt across the fields.
There are 2 bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed, large wardrobe, dressing table with large mirror and 2 bed side tables. The other bedroom has 2 single beds, wardrobe, bedside table and a very comfortable put-you-up for a possible 5th person. The bathroom contains a large shower, washbasin and WC.
The cottage has a very sunny terrace with garden furniture and BBQ and a small private garden and the large 1 acre garden with its mature trees, lawns, flower beds and natural pond is shared with the owners who are there to welcome any holiday maker who wishes to spend some time in this delightful corner of France. The property is on ground level with no steps and is therefore wheelchair friendly, but is not equipped for all possible needs.
La Gilardie is the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun and recharge your batteries. You can watch the buzzards circle the sky or the hen harriers hunt across the fields. You can go for long (or short!!) walks in the surrounding countryside and imagine that you are the only person in the world. La Gilardie is a paradise for butterflies, birds and all sorts of wild animals. If you like exploring medieval villages, shop in traditional french markets or visit interesting old towns, then La Gilardie can offer you all that and more. St. Aulaye with its 13th century Chateau Bastide, is about 3 km away. There you have a supermarket, post office, bank, doctor, dentist, bars, restaurants, in short, everything to make your holiday easy and enjoyable. An hour's drive could take you to the old market towns of Ribérac (21 km), Angoulême (45 km), or Périgueux (45 km). Beautiful Bordeaux is about 1 1/2 hour's drive away and even a trip to the coast at Royan takes only about 2 hours. If you like swimming, you have the choice of a river beach in St. Aulaye (the river Dronne runs through St. Aylaye), the public swimming pools in Ribérac or the beautiful lake at La Jemaye, about 14 km away. There are several water sport facilities at La Jemaye during the summer season. In St. Aulaye are tennis courts, play areas and horse riding is just outside of town. A golf course is a 5 min. drive away by car. Of the many places to visit, one must not forget the village of Aubeterre, one of the most beautiful villages in France, built into and onto a large rock formation, and it has the largest monolithic church in Europe. Exploring this part of the Dordogne with its many roman villages and churches can be most stimulating and rewarding.
