Les Figuiers is beautifully situated on the edge of a little hamlet in green rolling open countryside full of fields of sunflowers with the occasional vineyard sprinkled carelessly over the landscape. We live in the heart of the old Aquitaine where many of the villages date back to 12th and 13th centuries founded as fortified outposts of either the french or English forces during the Hundred Years war. Each village still has its traditional market day every week and they retain an astounding amount of their architectural heritage. There are literally hundreds of local vineyards near us which together make up the local appelations of Bergerac, Pecharmont ,Duras and cote Marmandais. Virtually all of them welcome people in to taste their production. There are also, of course, many lovely local restaurants where you can enjoy anything from simple perigourdine family cooking to haut cuisine and the prices represent great value .
A 1 hour drive will take you to the heart of the great Bordeaux and St Emilion vineyards or you could combine a vineyard visit with a day out in Bordeaux itself, a beautiful city and well worth exploring.Nearer to home are the pretty old towns of Bergerac and Perigueux and the famous castles of the Dordogne like Beynac and Castelnau facing each other across the river in timeless antagonism.
There are also plenty of activities nearby with several championship golf courses , including the very prestigious Chateau Vigier; Canoeing and kayaking on the Dordogne and Vezère rivers is a must for many people whilst Karting, an Aquapark for younger children and ten pin bowling are all available in Bergerac. another major attraction is the lakeside leisure complex at Lac de Gurccon with water chutes, swimming in the lake, bars and restaurants. Finally, Pro-Glisse, near to St Foy offers jet skiing, quad bikes and roller skating.
For those more interested in peace and quiet there are any number of quiet country walks and the simple pleasures of sitting totally relaxed by the pool !!
