Description

Located next to the River Isle in the Dordogne are our beautifully converted large barn sleeping 8/10, and a 2 bedroom character cottage/ gite , sleeping 4-6 (both have WiFi  broadband internet access). The properties are available to rent individually or together, providing flexible accomodation for larger groups. Both properties are detached from the main house and are approximately 30m apart.

Both have recently been renovated and the interiors are tastefully furnished with period furniture and decorated with a light and airy atmosphere.

Each property has a private patio area with a BBQ. There is a shared 10mx5m swimming pool, set within a gated courtyard garden to provide security for the smaller children. The pool has a Roman end with shallow steps for those that need a gentler entry to the water. There is also a paddling pool for younger children.

The property is set within 16 acres of private secluded grounds, 300m of which borders the River Isle, and has delightful views. There is a picnic bench located riverside for those long lazy lunches.

A shaded courtyard garden, surrounded by traditional Perigourdine buildings including a pigeonnier is also available for your use.

We are a very child-friendly environment and can supply a full sized table tennis table, outdoor toys for children, swings, boules, and a ‘tree house platform’ and trampoline for your use.

One of the unique things we offer is a wide selection of organic produce in season from our potager, along with homemade preserves and jams. We also are home to an ever-increasing flock of chickens and guinea fowl, so can normally provide fresh free-range eggs as well.

Centrally situated in the Dordogne, ideal for visiting the vineyards, markets, old towns and chateaux we are sure you will have a relaxing stay.

The Barn:

The barn has 2 large double bedrooms and 2 twin bedrooms, providing flexible accommodation for  8-10 people. The way in which the rooms are situated with a double and twin bedroom on each floor it divides perfectly for 2 families. There is also the option of an additional single bed in the upstairs twin bedroom. The upstairs landing has a large L- shaped sofa which could be used as an additional sleeping area and we  have 2 travel cots should you need them. The downstairs is wheelchair accessible, with a WC situated within the wet-room, but we would advise you to check any specific requirements you may have with us before making a booking.

The 40m2 dining/kitchen area has a dishwasher, large American style fridge/freezer, gas hob/oven, Dualit toaster, expresso machine, microwave and a huge collection of Le Creuset cookware. It is well equipped with many utensils, and crockery for upto 12 people. The dining table will also seat 12 comfortably, and within the dining area is an additional large beer/ wine fridge to keep your supplies chilled.

Downstairs there is an area with a hand basin  and a mosaic tiled wet-room with WC just beyond. A small snug, with WiFi, leads off the dining area with a twin bedroom beyond.

The large open-plan lounge has a double height ceiling with exposed beams and original cow byres. It has a wide selection of comfortable sofas and armchairs. There is UK Satellite TV, a DVD player and a CD/stereo. This area leads to a large double bedroom with French doors leading out to a patio.

Upstairs has an additional mezzanine seating area with an L- shaped sofa. The galleried landing has a large family bathroom, a fantastic double height master bedroom and a second twin bedroom at the end.

The interior has retained much of the original natural stone within the building and old wooden 'A' frames are still visible, providing a characterful yet modern environment. It is beautifully light and  open-plan  but still has areas where you can relax in a quieter space with the 3 lounge/ snug areas.

We have high-chairs and booster seats, and if you let us know the ages of your children we will also provide a selection of age-appropriate puzzles, books and dvd's.

The Cottage: (Full details are available on the Cottage listing Property ID 419)

The cottage has one double bedroom (with a kingsize bed) and a twin bedroom (with 2 singles). There is also a sofa bed in the living room, and so could sleep 4-6 people. An additional fold-away single bed is also available. Un fortunately we don't consider the cottage to be suitable for a wheelchair user. Although the property is on a single floor without stairs, the position of the WC is inaccessacble for a wheelchair.

The tiled kitchen/dining room is fitted with a gas hob/oven, fridge/freezer, microwave/grill combo, double enamelled sink, electric kettle and toaster. There is a huge selection of utensils, crockery, and Le Creuset pans. There is also a table and 6 chairs. The cottage has a wood-burning stove for those end of season breaks when the weather can be less predictable.

The living room has a sofa bed, and 2 other comfortable chairs. There is a TV, with a Sky digibox and DVD player. There is also a WiFi access point providing a broadband connection. There is a music centre and a wide selection of English books/magazines.

Finally there is a large family sized bathroom with a tiled bath, shower and hand basin , with a separate WC beyond.

A cleaning service is available on your final day for €40. A washing machine is available for your use ( at a nominal charge)should you require one and is situated in a utility area near to the main house.
The gardens are extensive (16 acres), and whilst it is very child friendly, we ask that you take responsibility for small children at all times. We also provide a babysitting service on request, so you can enjoy a quiet evening at one of the local restaurants.

Accessibility:
The downstairs of the barn is wheelchair accessible, with a wc and wet room suitable for people with mobility problems. The cottage would not be suitable for a wheelchair user due to the layout of the bathroom, the wc would not be accessible. Both properties have bedrooms on the ground floor.

Outside:
The garden is suitable for relaxing days, spent either by the shared (10m x 5m) salt water swimming pool or alongside the river. The pool has very low chloride, so is great for younger children and is situated in a walled gated area for additional safety. There is also a small paddling pool for younger children. Fishing is possible, as is cricket/ football or rounders as we have cleared an area as a pitch! There is a secluded courtyard with a pond. Both properties have separate and private outdoor patios with BBQ and outdoor garden furniture for your use. We also have a full sized table tennis table set up in a shaded area. There is also a 13' round trampoline and a tree house platform suitable for older children. We are walking distance to canoe hire (in high season), and also into Mussidan where there is a selection of restaurants, cinema, banks etc; Bicycle hire can also be arranged locally.

Coast/Beach:
Atlantic coast surfing beaches are approx 1 hour 30 mins away at Arcachon, where there is also the majestic Dune de Pilat (the largest sand dune in Europe). There are numerous river beaches within a short distance. The lakes at Lac Jamaye are a fantastic day out with a sandy beach, children's play area, cafés, canoes, swimming and walks (20 mins away). Canoe hire is possible in Mussidan during high season(1km) and many other towns locally. There is also the River Isle directly at the end of the garden, a great spot for picnics and swimming!

Golf:
The Manoir de Longeveau has an attractive 9 hole course (approx 40 mins) and there is an 18 hole public course at Perigueux (approx 30 mins). We believe that Les Vigiers golf club, 18 hole course, also accepts visitors (approx 1 hour away).

Travel:
30 mins from Bergerac airport: Ryanair (flights from Stansted, East Midlands and Liverpool), Flybe (Leeds Bradford, Southampton, Birmingham, Exeter, Bristol). 1 hour 30 mins from Bordeaux airport (flights from Dublin, London, Manchester and Birmingham). Limoges, La Rochelle and Toulouse airports are all approx 2-3 hours. Caen is the nearest ferry port (7-8 hrs on motorways). The A89 motorway (Lyon to Bordeaux) is 4km away. TGV from Angouleme (45 mins) to Paris within 2 hours 40 mins.

Distances:
1 min to Saint Front de Pradoux (baker, PO, supermarket). 3 mins to Mussidan which is a large town with restaurants, cinema (a beautifully converted old church which often shows English films), bakers, supermarkets, bars, banks etc;
20 mins Lake beaches at La cJamaye and Lac de Gurson (with water slide). 20 mins Riberac, St Astier, Chateau de Neuvic, Montpon, 30 mins Bergerac, Perigueux. 45 mins St Emilion, Aubeterre-sur Dronne, Brantome, Bourdeilles (historic villages). 1 hour 30 mins Bordeaux, beaches, Sarlat, Les Eyzies.

Further details:
About the climate: We are right down in the South-West of France where the sun is much higher in the sky all year round. We get lots of sunshine throughout the year, and just enough rain to keep the garden lush and pleasant. Spring comes early and temperatures can be in the 20's from March onwards, peaking at 40 last August, when, thankfully, the pool will keep you cool. Autumn, which is beautiful, can stay warm in the day, but with cooler nights. We aim to provide a relaxing environment in which you can unwind and have a quality holiday.
