La Courtoise - Property ID: 280
DescriptionLa Courtoise was once owned by Count Berger du Sablons, La Courtoise up to 1922 was the dower house of the neighboring medieval Chateau de Chastenay. The property can sleep 8 in its 4 magnificent bedrooms, and it has a superbly characterful private swimming pool. La Courtoise retains its own medieval charm in the oldest section of the house; however La Courtoise was reconstructed in the 16th century and was developed to by the first purchasers in the 1920’s. The pretty hamlet of Val Sainte Marie is dominated by imposing Château de Chastenay and its sister house La Courtoise. It is said that the famous French medieval alchemist Nicolas Flammel had his laboratory in the tower of the château and its facade is encoded with the secret information of the Knights Templar. The cellar of La Courtoise is where the Château wine was made years ago when vineyards existed on the slope down to the river. - On the ground floor there is a grand salon with 17th century fireplace, original oak floor strewn with oriental rugs, comfy sofas' & baby grand piano & music system. - The salon connects by glass paneled oak doors to a more informal petit salon with oak paneled walls where there is English satellite TV, DVD player & video player. - Following through the breakfast room is the well equipped kitchen and laundry room, (dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, dryer etc). - On the south-west corner of the property on the other side of the entrance hall is the formal dining room, with another 17th century stone fireplace and a wonderful beamed ceiling. - The top floor of the house is accessed by the old stone staircase in the tower of the house and arrives into a wide landing.- The main bedroom has a king size four poster bed, lavishly furnished with silk drapes, oriental rugs & antique furniture. In one corner of the large space is a luxurious cast iron bath and antique marble washstand converted to modern plumbing. - The 2nd double bedroom also has lots of traditional charm, a king size bed, large en-suite bathroom & balcony with superb views overlooking the river. - To the other end of the landing is an entrance to a smaller hallway off which to the right is a smaller cozy double bedroom with a normal size double bed and tastefully furnished with antique furniture. - To the left is a 4th smaller double bedroom with twin beds, also tastefully furnished in a country style.- There is a shower room to the center of the hallway and a separate toilet. - La Courtoise is set in beautiful tranquil gardens that stretch right down to the edge of the river Cure. La Courtoise is surrounded by the many sunny terraces that offer a peaceful atmosphere to relax and get away from it all. - A very unusual feature of the garden is the heated swimming pool designed by well renowned French sculptor Bernard Lancelle, it has exquisitely crafted fountains, rocks and a lily pond. - There is an outside table tennis table on the terrace above the pool along with another shaded dining area with BBQ facilities.- A key is provided for the shared tennis courts close by. Paris Charles de Gaulle is 227km away and Auxerre 25km from the property. La Courtoise is located in Burgundy between Avallon & Auxerre, and only a short 15 minutes drive from Chablis and its world famous vineyards. The pilgrimage of St Jacques de Compostelle passes by the doorstep of La Courtoise heading to the medieval town of Vezelay just 12km away; the basilico Vezelay is a UNESCO world heritage site. On our doorstep at Arcy-sur-Cure are the famous caves that contain the 2nd oldest prehistoric drawings found in mainland Europe.
